Idli and dosa are probably the most popular breakfast in South India. But how healthy are they? Idli is a steamed cake made from fermented batter of rice and black lentils. It is made in a specialized plate and served with different types of chutney and samba. Each plain idli has approximately 39 calories, 2 grams protein, 2 grams dietary fiber, 8 grams carbohydrates, and no fat.
Sounds healthy right? It is! since it contains no fat, and is pretty packed with protein and fiber, it is really good for a healthy diet and weight loss. It is also very friendly with the stomach and can be eaten when you are sick too.
This seems too good to be true though, right? Despite idli being such a boon, it does have a few minor disadvantages too. Since they are so small compared to other foods and can be eaten pretty quickly, you can easily loose count of how many you eat. This can be a problem, as overeating is a pretty serious problem. If the idli is prepared using a ready-made mix/batter, it may contain some preservatives and it defeats the purpose of eating this very healthy food. Another thing to watch out is that idli prepared at road-side stalls may not be hygienic and can be problematic sometimes.
